During a visit to the Wa Site of Chalice in 2008, an appeal was made by the chief and the Parents/Teachers Association of the Yuonuuri community where one of the sub-sites, YPK, was located. The appeal requested for a school building because the original building used by the school to accommodate all the students from Nursery to Junior High was built with mud and roofed with sticks. Nearly all of the building had collapsed, and the pupils were accommodated in sheds made of sorghum stalks.
The community is large with a population of approximately 1500 people, and, together with two nearby communities, they are able to provide the requested school with enough children yearly. The building of the school can impact the lives of the children positively as the new facilities will encourage more children to go to school and it can lower the drop rate as well.
After the initial correspondences between Chalice Canada and the Site Director the project was approved for the building of a 6-unit primary school block, a 3-unit Day Nursery block, an Administration block, a 6-seater KVIP toilet and 2 urinals.
