Is My Child and their Family Safe?

Our Sites are still working on confirming the status of all children but Chalice has received no word to date that any of our children are critically injured or deceased and based on the extent of damage at the Sites we are not expecting to. Our children are suffering from shock and emotional duress.  Some minor injuries are expected from either initial earthquake damage and or secondary accidents.

Accounting for our children and assessing the extent of injury and damage to their families and homes is a priority for Chalice and our Sponsor Sites. Unfortunately this is not an easy task and will take significant time.  There are many homes that we can still not access because roads and pathways are impassible. Transportation is also limited by fuel which is of great scarcity and many of our children live in communities some 15-25 km away from our central offices.  Where there is no means of transportation we typically depend on communications but there is still no reliable form of phone or mobile services available. We are therefore dependent on word of mouth to send messages by foot. To complicate matters many families are moving themselves to other family homes because their homes are no longer safe. Others have left to collect members (injured and deceased) from Port-au-Prince.  Typically we are able to contact the children through their schools but currently all schools across the country remain closed.  We are hopeful that this situation may improve in the near future as getting the children back into some form of a regular routine is highly important to their emotional wellbeing and recovery.  Our commitment is to reach every child and to assist their families in relief and recovery efforts as quickly and effectively as possible.
