Year of Consecrated Life: Sisters of the Cross of Chavanod - Madurai, India
Pope Francis proclaimed 2015 a Year of Consecrated Life, the three aims of the year were: to look to the past with gratitude, live the present with passion and embrace the future with hope. In that spirit Chalice will be sharing stories of the Sisters and Priests that give their whole heart to serve Christ. Through their tireless efforts our Sites run effectively, children are cared for and families given opportunities to improve their well-being.
The Chalice Sponsor Site in Madurai, India is run by the Sisters of the Cross of Chavanod, consisting of eight different sub sites, each directed by one of the Sisters. In the villages where they work, the Sisters are involved in education, social and pastoral work. With upwards of 700 sponsored children directly helped through sponsorship, parents are happy for the support given for their children, including school fees, uniforms and books, nutrition, health and hygiene.
The sisters at the Chalice Sponsor Site are a true example of Christ in this world. All 36 active nuns do a fantastic job running both the hospital and the girls’ school from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Each of the major departments in the hospital is headed by a nun with all of them having a Master’s degree or Doctorates in their field of expertise. The sisters also run a nursing school and some of these graduates continue to work in the hospital. Mother Superior manages this school and the convent.
“Sr. Jeya (Site Director) is always smiling,” says Ron Mercer, a current volunteer at the Site. “Staff at the Chalice office are great. Most of the nuns manage two portfolios and are very busy. I’m not sure how they are always smiling and joking.”
Chalice is collecting funds to build a new primary school for this sponsor Site to address current overcrowding at the school located in Kodaikanal. Originally designated a middle school, it has a student enrolment of 1000 from Primary to High School. Overcrowding has left a severe shortage of classrooms, with six classes being taught in the corridors and three classes in the auditorium. The noise level and congestion make it very difficult to provide any quality of education and there is no separate space for library, laboratory or staff.
The Sisters who work in Madurai face all obstacles head on, continuing to provide the services needed by their communities. They are a shining example that through Christ anything is possible.
“So I invite every Christian community to experience this Year above all as a moment of thanksgiving to the Lord and grateful remembrance for all the gifts we continue to receive. I ask all of you to draw close to these men and women, to rejoice with them, to share their difficulties and to assist them, to whatever degree possible, in their ministries and works, for the latter are, in the end, those of the entire Church.” Pope Francis

Sponsorship in Madurai
In many parts of India, children are encouraged to drop out of school at a very early age so that they can go to work and help support their families. Through Chalice sponsorship, children's school fees are paid, and families are helped with nutrition and medical care. This virtually eliminates the need for children to drop out of school. Sponsorship provides children with an improved quality of life and hope for a better future.
