Mangalagiri is in Guntur District in Andhra Pradesh State, situated on India's east coast. It is India's fourth-largest state by area and fifth-largest by population. The district is a major center for learning and has one of the largest universities of India, Acharya Nagarjuna University. The climate is tropical with average year-round temperatures ranging from warm to hot. Rice, tobacco, cotton and chilies are the main agricultural products cultivated there. The main occupation is hand-woven fabrics, including some of the most exclusive saris and dress material, having delicate and distinctive designs. The high cost of handloom fabrics limits the marketability of this product.
The Good Shepherd Sisters administer the Chalice Mangalagiri Sponsor Site with nine rural, remote and urban locations over three states. The target groups include: Scheduled Caste and Tribal people, slum children and children of commercial sex workers. The goal is to ensure quality education for children of marginalized families as well as nutrition and health development support. Many activities are offered to improve the socio-economic status of families and communities which includes various skill development programs and income generation activities. The Sisters also help educate parents by providing relevant workshops and training opportunities. It is the goal of the site for parents to become responsible for the growth and development of their children.
