Prayer for the Year of Mercy

Lord Jesus Christ,
You have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father,
You have told us that whoever sees you sees Him.
Show us your face and we will be saved.
Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief.
Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: "If you knew the gift of God!"
You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the god who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified.
You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God.
Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord.
"At times we are called to gaze even more attentively on mercy so that we may become a more effective sign of the Father's action in our lives. For this reason I have proclaimed an Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy as a special time for the Church, a time when the witness of believers might grow stronger and more effective." Pope Francis, Bull of Indiction of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy

As Chalice supporters, you have the unique opportunity to be an 'effective sign of the Father's action in our lives'. The lives of children at our sponsor sites are enriched daily by the generosity of Canadians who have been moved to act after hearing one of our Deacons speak at parishes throughout Canada.

Chalicle - Year of MercyThe Year of Mercy is a special time in our Church. It is also a perfect time to invite a speaker into your parish to talk about  the special bond that is created between a sponsor and their brother or sister overseas through sponsorship.

Pope Francis goes on in his Bull of Indiction  to point to the corporal works of mercy. "It is my burning desire that, during this Jubilee, the Christian people may reflect these works of mercy in their preaching so that we can know whether or not we are living as his disciples. Let us rediscover these corporal works of mercy: to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger, heal the sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead. And let us now forget the spiritual works of mercy: to counsel the doubtful, instruct the ignorant, admonish sinners, comfort the afflicted, forgive offences, bear patiently those who do us ill, and pray for the living and the dead."

The works of mercy, with the emphasis added above, are core tenets of what Chalice does. The children sponsored through Chalice are fed, clothed, welcomed and loved. As well, the spiritual works of mercy are lived out in Chalice's prayer ministry, where we have a reciprocal relationship of prayer between our sponsors, families in our sponsor sites and our Chalice staff and volunteers.

Please help us to share in the vision of Pope Francis, and to change the life of a child and their family in one of our sponsor sites. Call 1-800-776-6855, ext. 201 and we will arrange for a Chalice speaker to visit your parish.

Be merciful, even as your father is merciful." Luke 6:36

Teens in Ontario Embrace Year of Mercy through donation to ChaliceA group of teens in Ontario is partnering with Chalice (Canada) to bring clean drinking water to a community in need.  Over 884 million people in the developing world do not have access to safe drinking water.  400 million of these people are children.

Teens Encounter Christ, TEC, is a diocesan youth retreat program based in Thunder Bay, Ontario.  In honour of the Year of Mercy, the group is focusing its efforts on the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy.

After doing some research, the TEC teamed up with Chalice (Canada) to fulfil the Corporal work of mercy, give water to the thirsty. The youth group aimed to raise $600.00 to fund a water system.

Just before Christmas the teens met at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Thunder Bay, ON. This is the “home base” for many of the group’s members. The Parish Pastor graciously agreed to let them use the kitchen facilities and hold a bake sale there.

The sale was announced at Mass a week before it was to be held. Parishioners gladly responded and helped out in any way they could.  Even if they weren’t interested in sweets, many still made a cash donation. A few mentioned they were aware of the good work of Chalice (Canada) and were happy to give their support.  At the end of the sale there wasn’t very much left over and almost everything was sold.

The TEC was able to raise more than enough money for a water system. With the extra funds the group will also be able to fulfill another Corporal Work of Mercy, feed the hungry, by funding fruit trees, a rooster and chickens.
