About the Philippines

Located in southeast Asia, east of Vietnam, The Philippines is an archipelago of 7107 islands. Eleven of the large islands hold more than 95 percent of the population. The terrain is mostly mountains with narrow to extensive coastal lowlands. The climate is tropical marine; northeast monsoon in the winter months and southwest monsoons during the summer months. They must cope with many natural threats, such as; upwards of 15 cyclones each year (resulting in landslides and floods); active volcanoes; destructive earthquakes; and tsunamis.

Life in the Philippines

The gap between the very rich and very poor in the Philippines is very evident- the wealthy families live in gated communities while the poor live in shacks and government built housing projects. Corruption and political instability have contributed to a slow economic growth over the years. The Philippines also suffers from 'Brain Drain': educated Filipinos emigrate in order to have more success in their careers. Population living below poverty line: 26.5%. Unemployment Rate: 16.3%. Underemployment Rate: 20%. Children under 5 years who are underweight: 20.7% (2008). Child Labour (children ages 5-14): over 3.2 milion. Life Expectancy: 72.2 years. Infant Mortality Rate: 18.19 deaths/1000 live births.

Education is very important to Filipinos.Children are only required to go to school until grade 4. Public schools are very poor due to lack of government funding and teachers. Some public school teachers have 50 or more students sharing desks and books in a tiny classroom.
