Project Name: Roof Reconstruction at Horynka School
Project Location: Ternopil, Ukraine
Project Type: Education
Project Code: UTT1216
Background: The Chalice Ternopil Sponsor Site opened in 1998 and is administered by a local foundation, World of Children, with Luba Tsytsyk as Director.
Chalice Community Projects - Roof Reconstruction at Horynka School, UkraineThere are currently just under 2,000 children sponsored throughout the Ternopil region, with most coming from large, poor or low income families that struggle to give adequate care to their children. Most families survive on small subsidiary farms.

Horynka School (elementary through high school) is located 60 km away from Ternopil. The school was opened in 1956 and underwent significant changes in 1989: elementary school classrooms, a gym, and a cafeteria were added. There are currently 302 students (106 Chalice sponsored children) enrolled in this school. Many commute from surrounding villages - Dukhiv, Kunynets, Kushlyn, and Ivankivtsi. There are specially equipped classrooms for physics, chemistry, mathematics, history, biology, psychology, art, computer studies, Ukrainian language and literature, and world literature lessons. The school has a gym, a concert hall, a cafeteria, a library, a workshop, teachers' room and after-school program classroom. Horynka School is one of the best 54 schools in the district. This year it has been declared the hub school, with branches in Kushlyn Elementary and Junior High School and Ivankivtsi Elementary School. Children from these schools will be taken over to use the computer lab, workshop, and gym of Horynka School.

The roof of the school has never been replaced. Over the years, the slate sheets have broken, wooden parts have rotted, and roofing has started leaking. This results in damage to the ceilings, walls, and classroom equipment. The school has been receiving insufficient funding due to high levels of inflation, rising prices, and ongoing military operations in the country. Very little funding is being allocated for repairs. That is why the teachers, students, parents, and the local community are requesting the support of Chalice to reconstruct the roof of Horynka School.

Project Objectives: The purpose of this project is to reconstruct the roof at Horynka School. The project will extend the life of the school and provide benefits to students, teachers, and the wider community. The total cost of this project is $90,611 and Chalice is being asked to contribute $81,315. The remaining $9,296 will be paid by the District Department of Education.

Budget in Canadian Funds: $81,315.00
