Seven-year-old Chalice sponsored child passes away from complications following surgery for brain tumorLast November, following the loss of their home through fire, she and her two sisters were abandoned by their mother. Soon after their father passed away, leaving them in the care of their grandmother.

In early June of this year, Lhizelle experienced vomiting and her grandmother took her to the hospital. Her condition worsened and she become unconscious after the third day. At that point, our Sponsor Site Director got involved, and Lhizelle was rushed by ambulance to another hospital, where she was put under the care of a neurosurgeon. A CT scan of the brain was taken and it was determined that she had a tumor and other associated complications requiring the insertion of a shunt to relieve the pressure on her brain. Her condition stabilized at one point, but she came down with a fever. Sadly, on June 26th, Lhizelle passed away, never having regained consciousness.

Because of her family situation and her impoverished circumstances, Lhizelle did not even have an original birth certificate and therefore was not covered under the National Health Plan. The full amount of her medical expenses ($3182) had to be paid by the sponsor site in order for her to get any medical attention. The family has no way to repay these costs.

Our Sponsor Site Director has come to Chalice for assistance to help the family pay the medical expenses.
