PCC1216thumbProject Location: Chiclayo
Project Type: Education/Comm. Development
Project Code: PCC1216

Background of site
In peru the gap between the rich and the poor is increasing.
In urban areas, 20% of the population lives in poverty, while in rural areas the poverty level is at 54%. Women face inequality in the workforce, making 30% less than men, and violence against women is very high.

Centro Esperanza (Hope Centre) is a civil association for the fight against poverty through educational programs and projects which aim to strengthen the capabilities of the boys, girls, youngsters, women, and families. Our sponsor site in Chiclayo operates in partnership with Centro Esperanza. Our partners place emphasis on the organization and promotion of ethical and democratic leadership aimed at the comprehensive human development of the region of Lambayeque in Peru. Centro Esperanza works with more than 700 people and their communities, including 368 children sponsored by Chalice in the area in and around the city of Chiclayo.

PCC1216aTo achieve these goals the sponsor site, in addition to providing expected support in areas such as health, nutrition, and education, has run additional workshops for three groups, including parents (mostly women), children aged 8-12 years, and adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18. Workshops include educational and development support for the children at the different ages to supplement what they get in school, so that they can achieve better grades, deal with difficulties that arise because of the social conditions they live in, and be competitive in the search for employment. The parent workshops are designed to support them in topics such as communication and manners within the family, planning and management of family matters, children and adolescents' development, home care, and entrepreneurial skills. Our sponsor site also lacks a permanent facility to carry out these activities, as well as the regular management of the sponsor site.

Our sponsor site has recently transitioned from the distribution of benefits model to a model that distributes funds directly to the family. Children must attend school and still receive all the benefits, but through the family with the help and accountability of the family circle groups they belong to. Funding is no longer available to cover these extra programs that have been so crucial to the success of the work being done through our site.

Project Objectives: This project is to provide funding in the amount of $66,719 to continue with these workshops for the period October 1, 2017 until December 31, 2019. In addition, a new building will be constructed to provide a permanent facility to carry out these activities, as well as the normal responsibilities of the sponsor site. The land for the building has been donated by a family from the community and preliminary design work has been donated, leaving a total cost of $146,851 to complete this two-storey building. Total cost of the requests being made to Chalice is $213,570.

Budget in Canadian Funds: $213,570
