Jama Rose is a mother of five, living in Nairobi, Kenya. Her youngest, Ivy, is sponsored through our Nairobi site. Jama Rose was a music and social studies teacher until her illness began.

Jama Rose’s cancer treatment, Nairobi, Kenya

Nine years into her career, Jama Rose felt unusual pain when toileting. She did not think it was urgent and did not immediately seek treatment. Eventually, when she saw a doctor, she was diagnosed with stage III anal cancer.

She was referred to a well-known hospital for further assessment and treatment. Jama Rose was scheduled to undergo chemotherapy and radiotherapy sessions. She had to undergo surgery and start using colostomy bags – which are expensive. Sometimes, her hemoglobin levels are too low for her to undergo treatment.

As her health and family economy became more delicate, the Nairobi site connected Ivy with a Chalice sponsor. Through her Chalice family circle, Jama Rose co-founded a small shop, where she could earn an income while in treatment. Eventually, however, she was too ill to work there, either.

The family is in crisis. When she is not in the hospital, she must live with her eldest daughter, Melvin, who lives in an informal settlement in Nairobi. With medical costs mounting, Jama Rose and Melvin are not able to afford nutritious foods. A nutrient-poor diet puts Jama Rose at risk of being too anemic to continue her life-saving treatment.

Kenya’s national health insurance is taking care of Jama Rose’s current hospital bills; however, she requires support to keep up her insurance payments and buy colostomy bags.

The Nairobi site staff have therefore requested $4,983.00 CAD to pay for one year of health insurance, outstanding hospital bills, colostomy bags, as well as a small amount for her transportation to the radiotherapy clinic and home.
