Arcelyn is six years old and lives near our Tondo sponsor site in the Philippines.
In 2017, at the age of three, it was observed that she had crossed eyes. She was fitted with eyeglasses as the condition was quite severe. She wore the glasses for eight months before they broke. Her parents could not afford to replace them. Recently, Arcelyn's mother brought her in to the site office to request assistance and after seeing her eyes, our site director arranged to have her sent to a pediatric opthalmologist.
Arcelyn has been diagnosed with Accommodative Esotropia (eye crossing that is caused by the focusing efforts of the eyes as they try to see clearly) with Left Eye Amblyopia (a vision development disorder in which an eye fails to achieve normal visual acuity). The doctor has prescribed glasses. Arcelyn's father is employed as a casual construction worker and is the only provider for the family. The family does not have the money to pay for the cost of the glasses.
Our sponsor site director has asked Chalice for $163 to pay the family's medical bill and provide Arcelyn with eyeglasses so that she is able to have the problem corrected before it worsens and becomes permanent.
