The current uncertain times brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic has seen the Kenyan government close schools until January 2021.

Chalice critical needs - Mental health support for children in KenyaThis means that students who were to complete either primary or secondary school will need to repeat their classes.

This news shocked everyone and has negatively affected the lives of these teenagers in ways they cannot explain. The country has thus seen a surge in teenage pregnancy, domestic violence, school anxiety, etc.

Saidia site has 75 sponsored children whose parents have come to the office requesting mental health assistance for their children who are overwhelmed with sadness, crying, aloofness and silence. We all hope and pray that with the proper support, these precious sponsored children will recover from their depression and learn healthy coping mechanisms so that everyone can successfully return to school in 2021.

The 75 sponsored students will work for six months with counsellors in the Open-Up International Counselling Centre (OICC) which has been working in Gilgil since 2016. The site has worked with them before with great success.

The site also plans to introduce youth peer support programs where "youth support groups" will be formed to reach out to each other through text messages for those whose parents have phones. They will also meet weekly and, just like our Chalice family circles, they will form strong groups to work together and encourage one another. Twice a month, the groups will meet with a social worker.
