Project Location: Goa, India
Project Type: Critical Needs
Project Code: IGH0321B
Background: Hardworking Luiza is a 55-year-old single mother living near our site in Goa, India. She has been raising her two children with the income she earns with her own business as a snack vendor.
The support she has received through her daughter Valankani's Chalice sponsor has been tremendousy helpful.
Last October, Luiza began feeling intense pain in her abdomen and back, and had frequent urinary infections. Her doctor performed an ultrasound and CT scan and found two kidney stones. They were small enough that the doctor thought they would respond to medicine, dissolving and passing on their own. But neither medicine nor home remedies passed the stones, and she returned to the doctor in agony. The scans now showed the stone measured 17 mm, too large to pass, and requiring surgery. The kidneys were also infected. The doctors implanted a stent immediately while the infection improved. After two weeks, they performed the laser surgery to break the stones.
Luiza's snack business had been shuttered because of the pandemic lockdown in India, leaving her daughter's sponsorship funds as her sole source of income. The shutdown likewise prevented her from renewing her health insurance. She spent the little savings she had on the diagnostic tests and medicine in the autumn. These new hospital and medicine fees are far beyond her family's means to repay.
The Sisters who run the Goa sponsor site have requested $2,599.02 CAD to cover Luiza's expenses. These funds will encompass Luiza's scans and diagnostic tests, hospital fees, and medicine.
Funding Request: $2,599.02 CAD
Please note that any donations that exceed the request will be used to fund other critical need emergencies that may arise.
