Oleksandr and his older brother Mykola are now 17 and 18 years old, living with their grandparents near our Ternopil site in Ukraine.

Chalice critical needs - Barn repair and farm equipment replacement following fire, UkraineThe boys lost their parents to a car accident when they were toddlers, and were raised by their grandparents, Vira and Vasyl. Both boys have been grateful for their Chalice sponsors who supported them through their education, both pursuing certification as mechanics in trade school.

In 2018, the family was grateful to receive a cow through the Chalice gift catalogue. Together they support themselves selling dairy products. Their farm of potatoes and wheat, as well as some pigs, are the family's only source of income, in addition to being their main food source.

The family heard crackling noises coming from outside one evening in early August, and rushed to see their barn on fire. Neighbours rushed to help, and rescued all of the animals inside, which are now safely housed on nearby properties. Fortunately, Mykola only suffered minor burns to his hand while rescuing the animals.

Despite the firefighters' efforts, the barn and the equipment in it were all destroyed. The family lost their fodder cutters, chopper, mill, drill, chainsaw, welding machine, inverter, five tons of straw and hay, and some household items.

The cost to repair the barn and replace the fodder chopper alone is $5,154.78 CAD, far outside the family's meagre means. Support for this fund will enable the family to bring their animals home and resume their livelihood.
