Grandmother Jothi, 62 years old, lives with her husband, daughter Anusiya and her two grandsons near our Madurai site in India.

IMH1021largeOne of her grandsons, Aadesh, has the support of a Chalice sponsor. Anusiya lost her husband, and with her parents aging, is the sole breadwinner for the multigenerational household. She supports them on what she can earn as a casual farm worker.

One frightening night in October 2020, Jothi awoke to nausea and chest pain. Admitted to the hospital, tests revealed three large blockages to her heart. The cardiologist performed an immediate angioplasty (opening the coronary arteries) and installed a stent. With medication, her health improved over the next few months.

In July, a relentless fever prompted another hospitalization. Once COVID-19 was ruled out, the doctors diagnosed a urinary tract infection. After eight days, Jothi was discharged with antibiotics to take. However, the treatment was not sufficient and she was re-admitted the following month for the same UTI, for another week's stay. This treatment was effective, and Jothi is now healing well.

While  Anusiya and her family are relieved to have grandmother Jothi in good health again, her three hospitalizations, surgery, and medicine have left them with bills amounting to $4,028.55 CAD - far exceeding what Anusiya can earn alone while supporting her parents and children. The Sisters who run the Madurai sponsor site have requested the amount, which will cover medicine, Jothi's hospitalization, and tests and lab work.
