His doctors diagnosed liver sirrhosis, pancreatitis, severe anemia, and gastritis.
He began to deteriorate and lose weight rapidly. His daughter, Hermite, has a Chalice sponsor, and so the Haiti South site staff visited Luc Gerard in his home. They planned to assist him and his family through his treatment.
Luc Gerard's doctors were preparing him for palliative care when he succumbed to his illness early on a July morning. He is survived by his wife and five children.
His wife can earn some income as a trader, but there are very limited opportunities for employment or business in Haiti currently. Having lost Luc Gerard as an income-earner, the family is unable to afford the remaining costs of his treatment and the expenses associated with his burial.
The Haiti South team have prepared a budget that will assist the family as they recover from his loss. The budget is $1,662.56 CAD and include Luc Gerard's coffin and burial costs, assistance with the five children's school needs, outstanding medical bills, and eight months of grocery assistance.
