Gustavo is 16 years old and lives with his parents and two younger siblings. He is in grade ten, supported by a Chalice sponsor and our Sucre site. His father works as a bricklayer and the mother is a homemaker; their income is not enough to cover all their needs.
The first days of December 2023, as classes were ending for the semester, Gustavo started getting headaches at school. They were intense and did not subside with over-the-counter medication. His family took him to the neighborhood clinic, but they mistook his symptoms for a common cold. His health deteriorated rapidly.
They went to the hospital for more advanced testing, where he was diagnosed with acute leukemia.
Gustavo is now facing six rounds of chemotherapy to complete the treatment. In this first stage, doctors will be able to confirm drug resistance, so it is an extremely critical stage.
His medicine in this first critical round of treatment comes at a private cost of $3,163.50 CAD – far more than Gustavo’s parents can manage. The Sucre site staff have therefore requested to cover his chemotherapy costs.
