Karla lived with her two children, Luis, 10 years old, and Arlett, 6 years old. They are both blessed with the same sponsor through our Chiclayo site in Peru. Thanks to the support of a non-profit centre, Karla studied to become a chef. She was a diligent worker and was always very committed to her children’s education and health.

During the first months of 2023, Karla had dengue fever and was hospitalized. After a few months recovering at home, she fell ill again with fever, headaches, vomiting, fainting, and deliriousness. The doctors diagnosed her with Tuberculous Meningitis and hydrocephalus.

The doctors decided to operate. She stayed in the hospital for another three months, and then she went home to stay with her aunt Carmen and mother, Guadalupe, who also cared for Luis and Arlett. She was bedridden and her symptoms did not improve. She died at the end of February. She was 31 years old.

Her grieving family are left in a delicate situation. The children’s great-aunt Carmen and grandmother Guadalupe are now responsible for the children, and they have very limited financial resources.  They are both elderly and are not employed. They are afraid that they will not be able to afford a proper funeral for Karla while taking on their new life together as a family raising school-aged children.

The Chiclayo site has requested a budget of $2,269.11 CAD to cover her cemetery expenses (niche, headstones, ceremony) and funeral expenses (coffin, transportation). The budget also includes a two-month supply of food for the family, including staples like milk, beans, lentils, oats, chicken, tuna, rice, eggs, and noodles.
